Values
There
is no neutral ground in the business of educating our children. All
schools are based on a particular philosophy and promote certain
values. Fort McMurray Christian School is a testimony of God’s grace in our community.
- It helps children stand in awe of God and His creation.
- It explores the effects of sin and guides students toward Godly wisdom.
- It allows them to respond in service to God and to others.
|
Christian Education
The core of Christian education is education of the heart as well as the mind.
Parents
lay the foundations of the Christian life in their home, while the
Christian school expands the children’s horizons, deepens their
insight, improves their abilities and guides them along the path that
leads to wisdom.
Christian education is a careful
training of each dimension of the child – physical, emotional,
intellectual, spiritual, social, aesthetic, and moral – with unity and
consistency.

Organizational Structure
As
an alternative program of the Fort McMurray Public School District, we
operate within the confines of our agreement with the District, and the
Vision Document.
Fort McMurray Christian School is a member of Christian Schools International (CSI).
CSI is a North American body designed to serve individual Christian
schools that are autonomous. In the USA and Canada, there are over 500
CSI schools serving over 105,000 students.
CSI
schools are divided into thirteen geographical districts. In Canada,
there are three districts. New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Ontario form
District 10; Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba form District 11; and
British Columbia forms District 12.
District 11 is also known as the Prairie Association of Christian Schools (PACS)
and includes 16 Christian school communities in Alberta, Saskatchewan,
and Manitoba, and serves over 5000 students from K - 12.
The Christian Home and School magazine is the official publication of CSI and is available to parents and society memebers through the school.

Transportation
In
the past Fort McMurray Christian School has not provided transportation
to and from school for students. Parents depended mainly on car pooling
and details are usually worked out amongst parents during the first
week of school. This practice is still used by a number of families.
As
an alternative school under the umbrella of FMPSD, transportation for
our students by FMPSD is not mandated for the 2007-2008 school year.
Negotiations, however, have allowed bussing of students under the
category of a “Choice School”.
Choice Schools: If
parents choose to enroll their child in a school outside of their
designated attendance boundary, they are responsible for transportation
services. These students may access transportation services on a
priority basis - eligible, user pay, and then choice students provided
there is an existing yellow bus route available. If no route is in
effect, the public transit system could be utilized by the student.
Rates for a choice school are: $355.00 per student (approximately $1.96 per day).
This opportunity should be available for subsequent years.
If this is an opportunity that you would like to explore, please contact the school office.

Curriculum
Fort
McMurray Christian School, as a fully accredited school, follows
Alberta curriculum standards. In all subject areas, God is acknowledged
as the creator and sustainer of the world. Students will develop an
understanding of this awesome reality and the way that this affects
living in this world. Christian teachers integrate a Christian
perspective using their professional background and training, as well
as curriculum resources produced by Christian Schools International and
other Christian publishers. These fully trained, Alberta certified
teachers encourage students in their God-given responsibilities and
abilities. The grade integrated classrooms provide opportunity for
students to learn responsibility and cooperation, but also to develop a
spirit of community. Library visits, field trips and assemblies enhance
the students’ education. The low student-to-teacher ratio facilitates
greater individual attention. In our kindergarten, the students learn about
themselves, their families, friends, community, animals and God’s love
in our world. The goal is accomplished through Bible stories, play
centres, number and letter recognition, drama and games.

References
Students
or parents of students who attended Fort McMurray Christian School make
reference to their experience with the school:
I
recently had the most wonderful compliment about my girls and their
behavior towards others. One mother singled me out to let me know that
her girls have had fights, arguments and cat-fights with every other
child on the block, except mine. She told me that they have a wonderful
disposition, a friendly manner and have TAKEN all her kids could dish
out, my girls simply walked away. I personally thank my school and the
values that they have instilled in my children. Also my friends and
school family for all the Christian values that make me look as though
I am on top of it all. I am proud to sign my name, and proud to be a
Christian.
- Renee Smith
We
consider it a blessing to have the choice to send our children to FMCS.
This school provides a safe environment where Christian principles are
not only taught but are demonstrated daily by the staff. We appreciate
the low teacher to student ratios and the availability of the teachers
to address any concerns.
- Danny & Glenda Pollard
There
are so many reasons to love the Christian school. Some of the reasons
are the student ratio allowing more one-on-one for teacher and
students. The location is very convenient for us. The teachers and
administrators are excellent, as well as the teaching curriculum. We
also feel as if we have a say in what goes on in the school, the
teachers are totally approachable. We find the very most important
opportunity the school provides is to be able to get an education in a
Christian environment that is safe and productive. The children thrive
in this school and the reason is that, besides the teachers and
administration, the Lord is present. He and His Word are taught and
honoured there. God blesses and will continue to build and add on to
what He started. We are very happy to be a part of what God is doing in
Christian education in this city. We give thanks for faithfulness in
His service.
- Don Minard & family
I
first went to FMCS in its second year of operation being the 1994/95
year. I hadn’t known what to expect but I was quickly accepted and
became comfortable in my new environment. It was there that I truly
found my faith in God. I was surrounded by those going through
everything I was and not mocking or refusing God to show off. I found
FMCS to be a fun, clean environment that gave me freedom to be unique.
We had a whole unit on it actually! I miss it now that I am in a public
high school but FMCS and its teachers and students made an impact on me.
- Bonnie Arthur
The
Fort McMurray Christian School has become a partner with us in raising
our children. Being that our children are at school for six hours a
day, we felt it necessary to have them in an environment that would
encourage them to grow in the Lord. Our expectations were surpassed! We
have recognized wonderful changes in our children, an 11 year old girl
and an 8 year old boy, that we could have only hoped for before
attending FMCS. The teachers are very alert to each child and their
needs and call them on it. The care and concern exhibited by the staff
is what every parent wants for their children. They go beyond the call
of duty to make things happen for the student body. This also creates
an incredible school community, which makes us feel like family instead
of just a number. The Lord has blessed this school with a great
administration and staff, which we are so grateful for. He has given
Fort McMurray an incredible alternative to educating children of
Christian families. Praise His name.
